Kitten Weight Gain Chart (Birth–8 Weeks) + Free Printable Tracker
Helping a tiny kitten grow is one of the most rewarding experiences—but it can also be stressful if you’re not sure what “healthy progress” looks like. Whether you’re fostering, bottle-feeding, or monitoring a kitten from a large litter, keeping track of daily weight is one of the best ways to ensure they’re thriving.
This guide explains normal kitten weight gain, daily growth expectations, and how to spot red flags early. You can also download our free printable kitten weight chart to record progress week by week.
Why Tracking Kitten Weight Matters
Kittens grow incredibly fast—sometimes doubling their birth weight in the first week! Because they can’t tell us when something’s wrong, consistent weight tracking is one of the earliest and most reliable indicators of health.
Healthy kittens should:
- Gain 10–15 grams per day (on average)
- Steadily gain—not lose—weight
- Be active during feeding time and sleep quietly between meals
If a kitten isn’t gaining weight, it may be a sign of: dehydration, underfeeding, illness, parasites, inability to latch, or fading kitten syndrome. Taking action quickly can save their life.

Note: If a kitten doesn’t gain weight for 24 hours—or loses weight—take action immediately. Healthy weight gain is critical during early development.
How to Track Kitten Weight
- Weigh kittens at the same time each day (preferably before feeding).
- Use grams for accuracy (1 ounce = 28 grams).
- Record daily progress using a growth log.
- If a kitten fails to gain weight for 24 hours—intervene immediately.
What to Do if a Kitten Isn’t Gaining Weight
- Make sure the kitten is warm before feeding—cold kittens can’t digest food.
- Increase feeding frequency (smaller, more frequent meals).
- Check nipple size—switch to a smaller one if formula leaks from the nose.
- Consider switching to KMR® Kitten Milk Replacer for balanced nutrition.
- If the kitten seems weak or dehydrated, contact a vet or experienced rescue immediately.
