What Size Collar Does My Dog Need?

Getting a new puppy or dog can be an exciting time but can leave you wondering “What size collar does my dog need?”. Purchasing the right gear for them can be tricky or overwhelming if you don’t put some thought beyond the cuteness factor and giving your dog the perfect “look”. Be sure and plan ahead by measuring your dogs neck to find the appropriate size and fit. You can do this easily by using a fabric tape measure or by using a cutting a piece of string, then match the string to a regular ruler or tape measure for an accurate size.

Dog Collar Size Guide

We’ve put together a handy size chart guide for reference and to help you decide what size collar is best for your dog. It’s recommended to fasten your dogs collar with a two-finger space gap between the collar and your dogs neck. They need that much wiggle room to be comfy in their collar.

Dog Collar Types

There are many types and styles of collars to fit you and your dogs needs. These range from classic nylon snap buckle/adjustable collars to leather and chain styles. Most basic collars work fine for most breeds unless you are seeking a certain functionality or look. Here are some of our favorite collars to compare.

Growing Puppies

When fitting a new puppy for a dog collar you’ll want to get one that will adjust easily as they grow. Some breeds will grow substantially while others just a few inches over time. For medium to large or extra large dogs, you will likely need to purchase a secondary collar once they grow closer to their full size. Check for the two-finger gap each month and adjust as needed within the first year. For breeders they make these great colored I.D. bands that attach with a soft Velcro and can easily adjust to fit any breed of puppy 6 weeks or smaller. Check them out here.

Harnesses are also a great alternative to traditional collars. Some dog breeds are more prone to tracheal issues than others. These breeds include Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Toy Poodles, and Yorkshire Terriers. If you have one of these breeds and they like to pull on leash, a harness is definitely the way to go. Harness types range from a step-in style to a slip-over, or buckle around. Here are some styles we carry for reference.
