Depending on your experience with cats using catnip, you might think its simply a treat or you may lean towards thinking its more like a stimulant. However, even though it may give your kitty the symptoms of a “high” it’s not actually a drug.
How do Cats Respond to Catnip?
A cat can have a range of experiences after inhaling nepetalactone (catnip). These may include rolling on their backs, becoming vocal, and having their eyes dilate. There have been some reports of cats becoming hyperactive and energetic as opposed to overly calm and relaxed. It affects cats through certain cells inside their body to release endorphins. Interestingly enough, cats tend not to respond to catnip if it’s ingested, only if it’s inhaled or sometimes if they chew on it. Regardless, not all felines will respond the same.
Is Too Much Catnip a Bad Thing?
The short answer is no. Cats cannot overdose on catnip. Some owners use it to help calm a feline in a stressful situation or stimulate them if boredom strikes. Cats can however become ill if they ingest too much, causing vomiting or diarrhea. Those reactions are rare and will pass quickly if experienced.
Unexpected Benefits of Catnip
Catnip is also an all-natural insect repellent
The good keeps getting better. Some believe that cats instinctively use catnip as an insect repellent. This, along with several other natural “alternatives,” like silver vine and valerian, have shown significant insect-repellent effects. Please note it is not approved to be used as a sole preventative for fleas and ticks and should merely be used as an additional defense among an oral or topical product to ensure your pets safety from heartworms, allergies or infestations.
Types of Catnip
Catnip is available in various forms including dried leaves, sprays, and even bubbles! There are a lot of cat products on the market that are catnip infused such as cat scratchers, toys and treats. It comes in many different forms, however they all will promote the same experience for your feline friend.
