Overgrown nails can cause serious problems if they accidentally get caught in something and your bird subsequently struggles to get free. Toe and leg fractures are common outcomes. The nails of pet birds typically need periodic trimming since they’re not being worn down naturally as they would be in the wild.
Your bird will need be held securely but cradled so as not to restrict the chest movements of respiration. Cut the nail in one smooth stroke. Trimming more often with smaller cuts will help avoid clipping the quick. Keep coagulating powder on hand in case you clip too closely.
