Is Warmer, Better?
Most people only think of their pet needing a pet bed warmer during the cold winter months, which makes sense for the most part. However, pets who experience joint pain or muscle stiffness can benefit from a pet bed warmer year round. The heat from a pet bed warmer can help soothe pain, and calm ache muscles, making it an ideal place to rest. A pet bed warmer can also be helpful for pets whom have lost body fat in their older age. They may struggle to keep their body heat temperature consistent.
Types of Heated Beds
Dogs and humans tolerate heat differently. Which means a human grade heating pad or blanket isn’t intended for use with your pup. If your pet would benefit from a heated pet bed, be sure to purchase one specifically made for dogs. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. It will tell you exactly how it works and how long your dog can safely be on it. There are a multitude of pet bed warmer products available to fit the lifestyle and budget for your home.
Electric Pet Bed Warmers provide a subtle heat and reaches a maximum temperature of 102°F, which is the natural body temperature of dogs & cats. A regular human heating pad will be much too warm and could damage a pet’s skin and cause him/her to be afraid of the heat source. Electric warmers should be placed inside a pet bed that offers at least a 1/2″ padding between your pet and the heating source. It should never be used by itself. This will keep the surface of the bed at about 15°F above ambient air temperature until the pet lies on the bed. When the pet lies on the bed, it will warm to about 102°F. Recommended only for indoor use.
Self warming pet beds offer an alternative to power sourced heat. Some self warming beds utilize the same heat-reflecting technology found in Mylar space blankets. Most are lined with a layer of material that generates warmth by reflecting your pet’s body heat and radiates back the warmth to the source. Soft materials such as faux lambs wool are great for trapping body heat to keep your pet warm.
Microwaveable warming inserts can be placed into most pet beds, and under any crate mat. Easy to use, just pop into the microwave for 4-5 minutes and it will stay warm for as long as 12 hours. Be sure not to place directly on a beds body as direct heat would be too warm.
