Directions:
Read and follow the prescription label carefully.
Give the exact amount prescribed and only as often as directed.
Give this medication for as long as your veterinarian directs. Do not skip doses or stop giving the medication without consulting your veterinarian. Missed doses reduce the effectiveness of therapy. This medication may be a life-long medication.
Fluoxetine will be administered in conjunction with a positive behavior modification program. It is essential to follow the training plan as well as administer the medication, to achieve therapy success.
It may take several weeks before effects of the medication are noted. Dose adjustments may be made based upon an assessment of how your dog or cat is responding clinically. Baseline and periodic blood testing may be necessary to assess the pet’s health and response to Fluoxetine.
Do not abruptly discontinue this drug. It will be necessary to slowly taper the dose over time to reduce unpleasant side effects and ensure your pet’s behavior does not return.
Discuss with your veterinarian if this medication is to be given with food. If your pet experiences digestive upset following medication administration, try offering with a small amount of food or a treat. Do not give your pet aged cheese while on Fluoxetine.
This medication will take effect quickly, in about 1 to 2 hours, but its effects may not be visibly noticeable for a few days. In some pets, it may take several weeks of medication in combination with behaviour modification to see improvements.
Call ahead for refills.
Ideally, give this medication at the same time(s) daily.
What if dose is missed?
If a dose is missed, give it as soon as you can. If it is time already for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to the normal schedule. Do not give two doses at the same time.
